Horizontal Directional Drilling

Precision underground boring for utility installation beneath roads, driveways, and waterways — without tearing up your property.

Professional HDD Services in Greenville, SC

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is the backbone of what we do at Sloan Underground Construction. As The Boring Guys, we specialize in precision underground boring that allows us to install water lines, gas lines, electric lines, fiber optic cables, and conduit beneath your property without the mess and destruction of traditional open-cut excavation. Our HDD services are available throughout Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Asheville, and the entire Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina region.

Using professional-grade Ditch Witch equipment — including our JT520 directional drill — we can bore underground pathways with pinpoint accuracy. Whether the job calls for drilling under a residential driveway, a busy commercial parking lot, a public roadway, or even beneath a creek or waterway, our crew delivers clean, efficient results every time. The owner is on every job site, ensuring that quality and precision are never compromised.

Horizontal directional drilling is the preferred method for underground utility installation because it eliminates the need for open trenches. That means no torn-up yards, no destroyed driveways, and no expensive surface restoration after the job is done. For homeowners and business owners across the Upstate, HDD is the smarter, faster, and more cost-effective way to get utilities underground.

Whether you need a single bore for a residential water line or a large-scale commercial project requiring multiple runs of conduit, Sloan Underground Construction has the experience, equipment, and work ethic to get it done right. We take pride in leaving every job site cleaner than we found it.

What Is Horizontal Directional Drilling?

Horizontal directional drilling — also known as HDD, directional boring, or trenchless drilling — is a steerable, trenchless method of installing underground pipes, conduits, and cables. The process uses a surface-launched drilling rig to create a bore path along a predetermined underground route. A pilot hole is drilled along the planned path, then enlarged (reamed) to the required diameter before pulling the product pipe or cable through the bore.

Unlike traditional open-cut methods that require digging a trench from the surface, HDD works entirely underground. The only surface disturbances are the small entry and exit pits at each end of the bore. This makes HDD ideal for crossing under obstacles like roads, driveways, sidewalks, landscaping, parking lots, and waterways where open excavation would be impractical, expensive, or prohibited.

Benefits of Horizontal Directional Drilling

  • Minimal surface disruption — No torn-up lawns, driveways, or landscaping. Your property stays intact.
  • No open trenching required — Eliminates the need for excavation, backfill, and costly surface restoration.
  • Works under roads, driveways & waterways — Cross beneath obstacles that would be impossible or impractical with open-cut methods.
  • Faster than traditional methods — Most residential bores are completed in a single day, and commercial projects move on accelerated timelines.
  • Cost effective — Less labor, less equipment, and no surface repair costs make HDD a budget-friendly choice.
  • Environmentally friendly — Reduced soil disturbance prevents erosion and minimizes environmental impact on the job site.

HDD Applications

Horizontal directional drilling is a versatile technology used for a wide range of underground utility installations. At Sloan Underground Construction, we use HDD to install:

  • Water lines — New water service lines, main replacements, and irrigation lines for residential and commercial properties.
  • Gas lines — Natural gas line installation for homes, businesses, and new construction developments.
  • Electric lines — Underground electrical conduit and direct-bury cable installation to replace or supplement overhead power.
  • Fiber optic cables — High-speed fiber optic infrastructure for internet service providers and telecommunications companies.
  • Conduit placement — Empty conduit runs for future utility installation, communications infrastructure, and multi-use pathways.

Our HDD Process

Every horizontal directional drilling project at Sloan Underground Construction follows a proven process that ensures accuracy, efficiency, and minimal disruption to your property:

  • Free estimate & consultation — We discuss your project, review the site conditions, and provide a transparent, no-obligation quote.
  • Site assessment & utility locate — Before drilling begins, we coordinate with utility locators to identify all existing underground utilities and map out the bore path.
  • Pilot bore — Using our Ditch Witch JT520 directional drill, we drill a small-diameter pilot hole along the planned underground path with precision steering.
  • Reaming & enlargement — The pilot hole is enlarged to the required diameter using a back reamer, creating enough space for the product pipe or cable.
  • Product pullback — The pipe, conduit, or cable is attached to the reamer and pulled back through the bore hole into its final position underground.
  • Clean finish & restoration — We clean up the job site, restore any disturbed areas, and leave your property looking as good — or better — than before we arrived.
